About the Carsey institute

The Carsey Institute is becoming a leading national center for policy research on youth, working families, and sustainable development in small cities and rural communities. Our studies provide tools for policy makers and community leaders working to increase upward mobility, support the middle class, and create sustainable, healthy communities.  Our three applied and policy research programs include regional and national projects, and our resources support organizations throughout the country.

Center on Rural Youth

We partner with local leaders to investigate the complex challenges facing today’s rural youth and to provide the rigorous research and analysis to develop programs and policies that support rural youth who are at high risk of failing during the transition from youth to adulthood.

Working Families Policy Center

We provide research and analysis on working parents and their children for policy makers and other leaders seeking to expand opportunities to build assets and to raise children in healthy, working families.

Sustainable Development and Rural Area Studies

Our interdisciplinary teams conduct research on changing communities with special attention to how environmental stewardship, local energy production, and cultural development can revitalize rural communities.

Resources for Non-Profits and Foundations
The Carsey Institute provides tools for those working to support youth and families and achieve sustainability, through our survey research, our Policy Leadership Initiative, demographic analyses, evaluation, mapping, and indicator sites, as well as strategic planning and organizing.

The Carsey Institute was established in May 2002 from a generous gift from alumna and noted television producer Marcy Carsey. The institute has received support from the Ford, Kellogg, Annie E. Casey, New Hampshire Charitable, and Fuller Foundations, Jane’s Trust and the New Hampshire Endowment for Health, among others.
