Michael Swack joins the Carsey InstituteThe Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire is pleased to announce that Michael Swack is joining the institute as research faculty. He will also be Professor of Economics and Sociology at the University. Swack's first projects at the Carsey Institute will be in the area of community and development finance, including projects looking at mechanisms to take community economic development to scale, new financial innovations for the field, and research on mission related investment by foundations and other nonprofits. He brings extensive experience in building research and programs. Swack was most recently founder and dean of the widely acclaimed School of Community Economic Development at Southern New Hampshire University. He is a leading innovator in community development finance, and he wrote the legislation that led to the creation of the Community Development Finance Authority. In 1983, he was the founding president of the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund.
"We're excited about Michael joining the Carsey Institute. He will deepen and broaden our research in community economic development as well as strengthen our ability to work effectively with development practitioners on the ground," said Carsey Director Mil Duncan today. Michael Swack received a Ph.D. in Community Development and Mangagement from Columbia University and a MCRP from Harvard University.

The Changing Faces of New England: New Demographic Study ReleasedSenior Demographer Kenneth M. Johnson's latest Carsey report shows that New England is becoming more racially diverse. While it is growing more slowly than the rest of the nation there are sharp contrasts between the demographic trends in northern and southern New England as well as between trends in metropolitan and rural areas.
