Social innovation is a growing field that combines the passion and purpose of a social or environmental mission with the rigor and accountability of a market-based approach to enterprise design, financing, and operations. The Center on Social Innovation and Finance at the University of New Hampshire provides for-profit and nonprofit organizations the talent, skills, knowledge, and networks needed for growing successful social enterprises. This work has grown from the Carsey Institute's
mission focus in policy research on community economic development and
has grown quickly to become a crucial part of the institute.

Master of Arts in Development Policy and Practice |
The Master of Arts in Development Policy and Practice (MADPP) is a fourteen-month program that prepares individuals for advanced policy- and practice-oriented work in sustainable development both in the United States and in developing countries. |
Sustainable Microenterprise and Development Program |
Founded in 1999 as the Microenterprise Development Institute, the Carsey Institute’s Sustainable Microenterprise and Development Program (SMDP) provides training and networking opportunities for practitioners in the fields of microfinance, enterprise development, social enterprise, and community based and rural development. |
Stonyfield Entrepreneurship Institute |
The Stonyfield Entrepreneurship Institute was conceived by Gary Hirshberg in 1998 based on his experience growing Stonyfield Farm, Inc. from its humble start as a seven-cow operation in 1983 to its current $359 MM annual sales level. |
Carsey Social Innovation Internship |
Do you want to change the world? Whether you’re already committed to a career at the intersection of mission and business, or curious how to apply your major’s skills toward social and environmental good, the eight-week Carsey Social Innovation Internship will: (1) connect you to leading for-profit and nonprofit organizations for a rigorous and meaningful summer internship; (2) provide UNH training in social entrepreneurship; and (3) support you to mobilize your UNH peers during the school year. All this, along with a $2,500 stipend! |

Created in 2000, the Financial Innovations Roundtable (FIR), housed at the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire, creates cross-sector partnerships among conventional and non-traditional lenders, investors, and markets to provide low-income communities with increased access to capital and financial services. The Financial Innovations Roundtable is not only a think tank, it is a “think-do” tank. Some of the most successful ideas developed at the FIR have been implemented, resulting in new tools, policies, and practices (see below) that have resulted in millions of dollars being directed into investments in affordable housing, small and minority businesses, community facilities, and other community development efforts. |
