Parental Messages Matter to Teenagers

When it comes to deciding whether to stay in New Hampshire's rural Coos County or leave for other opportunities, young people - even teenagers - are listening to their parents.

That's the finding of a new brief from Carsey Fellow Corinna Tucker for the Carsey Institute's Tracking Changes in the North Country project. Surveying seventh- and eleventh-graders in public schools in Coos County, New Hampshire's northernmost and most rural county, researchers found that young peoples' future intention to migrate from Coos in search of economic or educational opportunities or to remain in Coos to pursue a future close to home are closely aligned with the messages their parents deliver to them.

Rural Children More Likely Living in Cohabiting Households

As cohabiting – opposite-sex unmarried partners living together in households – increases nationwide, new data show that the growing rate of children in cohabiting households is most pronounced in rural areas. A new brief from Carsey Policy Fellow William O'Hare analyzes recent U.S. Census Bureau data to explore trends and patterns among children in cohabiting households in rural America.

Rural Workers to Benefit from States' Changes to Unemployment Insurance

Rural workers stand to benefit from the modernization of unemployment insurance (UI) to cover part-time workers, which is an opportunity for states under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Plan (ARRA), a new brief from the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire finds. Rural workers are more likely to work part-time, and many states that do not provide UI benefits to part-time workers have higher than average proportions of rural residents.
