John W. Seavey

Senior Fellow

John W. Seavey is the Everett B. Sackett Professor, Chair of the Department of Health Management & Policy, and Director of the Master of Public Health Program. He came to UNH from the University of Arizona’s Health Sciences Center in 1980 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Professor in 1992. He received his baccalaureate degree from Bates College, an MA and PhD in political science from the University of Arizona, and a Master of Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health.

His research focus is on rural health care in the United States with a particular focus on hospitals, strategic planning, and long term care. Publications include two books (The Strategies and Environments of America’s Small Rural Hospital and Strategic Management of Healthcare Organizations ) and numerous peer reviewed publications in scholarly journals and monographs. The Strategies and Environments of America’s Small Rural Hospital was funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. He currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in health policy and health policy analysis.

He has been the recipient of the School of Health & Human Services Teacher of the Year Award (1986), UNH Outstanding Associate Professor Award (1991), the UNH Bill Kidder Faculty Award (1999), School of Health and Human Services Distinguished Career Research Award (2003), UNH Honors Convocation Speaker (2003), UNH Faculty Social Justice Award (2005) and Distinguished University Professor (2005).
