Is the Middle Class Losing Ground?

Speakers: Ross Gittell, James. R. Carter Professor of Management, Jason Rudokas, M.S. candidate, Economics, Allison Churilla, Ph.D. candidate, Sociology

In the 1990s, New England went from having the lowest income inequality in the nation to the fifth highest of the nine Census regions. While with increasing inequality the hallowing out of the middle class and the rise of the wealthy are pervasive across the region, there is significant variation within the region. Professor Gittell and Jason Rudokas will their research on income inequality in New England with a focus on recent changes. 

Allison Churilla will describe characteristics of  New Hampshire's low-income families and conclude with reflections on state and federal policies relevant to this population.

Achieving Equitable, Economic, and Environmental Outcomes through Community Development

Speakers: Stephen Cole, Director of Farms, Fisheries, Forests, Environment & Communities, Coastal Enterprises Inc., Chris Colocousis, Ph.D. candidate, Sociology

Stephen Cole will discuss the experience of Coastal Enterprises, Inc., a community development practitioner serving primarily Maine, in achieving 3 E – equitable, economic, and environmental – outcomes through its work. He will focus on both the leverage points and challenges and discuss the relationships and partnerships needed to forge a new model of 3E investments and outcomes. 

Chris Colocousis is working with the Northern Forest Center to construct an index of regional well-being for the Northern Forest. He will discuss this indicator research and the findings of the analysis, which will focus on the variation of northern forest counties among various measures of social and economic well-being.

Addressing Federal Fiscal Pressures on Human Services Programs

Robert Greenstein, Founder and Executive Director, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

For the past two decades, Robert Greenstein has been one of the preeminent observers of federal tax and spending policy, with a particular focus on programs serving low income Americans. In this special evening seminar being offered as part of the Carsey Policy Leadership Institute but open to all, he will discuss the pressures of federal policy making on state services and nonprofit efforts within the states to accommodate these pressures.

Evaluation Research: Bridging the University and Nonprofits

Speakers: Sally Ward, Professor of Sociology, Sarah Savage, Ph.D. candidate, Sociology and Carsey Evaluation Fellow

The Carsey Institute works with nonprofit organizations in northern New England on program evaluation. Professor Ward and Sarah Savage will discuss this initiative and present findings from evaluation research on the Community Loan Fund’s manufactured housing park program. They will talk about future research and opportunities for nonprofits to collaborate with the Carsey Institute.
