Topic: Changing Communities: Demographic Trends in Rural America

Speakers: Kenneth Johnson, Visiting Senior Fellow, Carsey Institute and Professor of Sociology at Loyola University-Chicago

Over the past few decades, rural America has experienced periods of population growth as well as decline. Recent population growth in rural areas has been uneven, with some areas growing rapidly while others have grown little, if at all. Such uneven patterns of growth are now evident in urban America as well. And, population growth in both urban and rural Ameirca depends increasingly on immigration. This selective deconcentration of the population presents important new challenges for scholars as well as for planners and policy-makers.
